Sacramento Kings Arena

By Diana T. (3/28/16)

The new Kings Arena is going to be known as the Golden-1 Center. The Arena should be built before the 2017 NBA season. This arena will consist of 1,000 Wi-Fi access points for 17,500 seats. The King’s explained that the network could handle over 500,000 Snapchat posts per second. Due to the new arena in downtown, there will be major traffic jams in the city of Sacramento when the Kings would be playing. Ranadive is the owner of the arena. He said that there would be an official app which people can order food through. The owner of the arena plans for the arena to be used for just more than basketball. Owner Ranadive is confident that the new arena will be awesome. If you’re curious to see it, come in 2017 and it will be time to prove it!

By Zach M. (2/24/16)

In a 50 students survey of: "What team or players are students looking forward to seeing in spring sports, if any?", there was a variety of answers. 14% of people voted for teams in football,  4% of students voted for teams and players in soccer, 24% were not looking forward to sports, 32% voted for basketball, and baseball got 24%. The majority of the answers were students who were not interested in any sport teams or players or is following the Warriors, and both were at 24%. The next top choice is the Giants at 20%, and not far behind is the 49ers at 10%. Everyone else included: Barcelona, The Thunder, Raiders, Kings, A’s, Lebron James, Spurs, Christiano Renaldo, The Dodgers, and The Broncos was lower than 5%. My conclusion is that most people will be following players and teams in basketball, or will not be watching at all.

Steph Curry's Current Stats 2015-16

By Mike P. (3/7/16)

The starting point guard of the Golden State Warriors, Stephen Curry is having a great season. In the 2015-2016 season so far Stephen Curry, a great 3 point shooter, is the leading scorer in the NBA, National Basketball League. He averaged 30.5 points per game. Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors, located in Oakland, have the best record in the NBA with 55-6. This means that they won 55 games and only lost 6. He also helps the team with averaging 6.6 assists per game also averaging 5.3 rebounds per game. He has very good ball handling, great passes, and is very good at shooting 3 pointers. Even though the Golden State Warriors are a very good team, they do have their downsides like their last game against the Los Angeles Lakers. In this game, Curry only had 18 points, and the Golden State Warriors had the lowest percentage in 3 point shots this season. In the end they lost 112-95. This is one of the 6 loses the Golden State Warriors had this season.

Less Fighting in the NHL

By Mike P. (3/1/16)

To begin, the NHL is the National Hockey League. Have you noticed that their was a lot less fighting this year in hockey? Well if you did not, it actually has. John Scott, a NHL player, is always looking for a fight and admits that it is getting harder to find fights. The article “NHL players are dropping gloves to the ice less often” John Scott states, “But there is a funny twist to the story about Scott and his fighting ways. In recent seasons he has had difficulty finding anyone willing to fight him.” Also, in 2014 season there was 332 fights but in 2015 season there was only 259 fights. These stats shows that in the NHL there a lot less fighting going on as John Scott says. A reason fights may have stopped a lot more is because of people trying to ban fights in the NHL.

Super Bowls 50: Panthers v. Broncos

By Asa G. (2/7/16)

Santa Clara, California will be the home of the 50th Super Bowl. Kickoff starts February 7th, 2016. Many events around the Bay are being held to celebrate the game’s 50th anniversary. One of the events is Super Bowl City in San Francisco. There, people can take pictures with cardboard cutouts of the players, take a look at past Super Bowl rings, and play many specially designed games. The two teams that have made it to the Super Bowl are the North Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos. One of the star players on the Panthers side, Shaq Thompson, was born in Sacremento. Shaq is a linebacker and first played at Grant Union High School in California. Then he went to play college and this year, he was drafted to the Panthers as a rookie. Some other key players on the Panthers will be Cam Newton. Cam is their quarterback and has played with the Panthers since 2011. The Panthers were founded in 1995 and have never won a Super Bowl. If they do win this will be their first Super Bowl win.

The Broncos

By Theo N. (2/5/16)

The 12-4 Broncos has made the Super Bowl after a few close calls. They were 7-0 at the beginning of the season until they faced back to back losses against the Colts and Chiefs. In the end, they make it to the playoffs with the number one seed which grants them an automatic bye and they get home field advantage. During the playoffs, they had to go against the Patriots which was really close as the score was 20-18 in favor of the Broncos. On 4th and goal Tom Brady, the quarterback of the Patriots threw it and got a touchdown but they had to go for two and did not convert leaving the Broncos a victory. The Broncos play in a 3-4 formation which means that one linebacker will be playing on a defensive line, which is player Von Miller. Von Miller is an extraordinary linebacker. He has gotten to the quarterback and took him down or sacked him 11 times. Von Miller will be looking to get a Super Bowl ring. Another player who is important is Peyton Manning, the quarterback. This could be his last season and so he wants to win it. He has been in this league for 18 years. He has not thrown an interception in the postseason. He was injured earlier in the season and has been doing well ever since he came back. DeMarcus Ware is a defensive end which means he will try to sack the quarterback. Other than Von Miller, he is a really good pass rusher on the Denver defense. He has experienced 11 years in the league.

Harper Lee was the author of one of the best selling novels, To Kill A Mockingbird. It is about a girl named Scout living in a town in the South, in the 1930s. Suddenly, in an incident where an African American man is wrongly accused for assaulting a White woman, Scout’s father, a lawyer, tries to defend the black man despite the threats he gets. In 2015, it sold more than 40 billion copies all around the world. A Survey by the Library of Congress found that Harper Lee’s novel stands below the Bible as one of the books that had an important effect on people’s lives. Evidently, the book was originally titled “Atticus”, but later titled To Kill a Mockingbird. It was named after an old saying, “It was all right to kill a blue jay but a sin to kill a mockingbird”. Bond, James Bond

By Colin K. (3/3/16)

Spectre is the new 24th movie in the Bond series. Daniel Craig plays Bond and is the fifth person to impersonate the Mi6 spy of Ian Fleming’s dreams. There have been 12 books, and 11 short stories about Bond. Sean Connery was the first Bond, then came Timothy Dalton, Roger Moore, and Pierce Brosnan. Ian Fleming did the 23 original books, James Garner did 16 other books on Bond and his adventures, and after that was Raymond Benson with 12 of his own and Charlie Higson with 7. Steve Cole, Sebastian Faulks, Jeffery Deaver, William Boyd, and Anthony Horowitz all did one each. So in all, there have been 63 books and 24 movies all about Bond’s adventure.

After being cancelled in 2012, the Jaguar C-X75 was recommissioned to appear in Spectre.

The Aston Martin DB10 is driven by Bond in the film.

The Aston Martin DB5 reappears after reconstruction in Q's workshop at the film's ending, with Bond driving away with it.

The new Bond movie was an excellent piece of Bond. I’d give it a ✰✰✰✰/✰✰✰✰✰. I give it this because my mom fell asleep during the movie.  But there’s lots of explosions, breakneck speeding, and girls, all classic aspects of a Bond movie. And of course, Bond will return in the next movie.

Mattel's New Barbies

By Salamita U. (2/10/16)

Barbie's manufacturer, Mattel, announced that the new doll has three new body types: curvy, tall, and petite. She also now comes in seven skin tones, 22 eye colors, and 24 hairstyles. Michelle Chidoni (Mattel spokeswoman) said the product is evolving to “offer more choices”  and to make “the line more reflective of the world girls see around them”. Body type was only one of the criticisms. The other was the brand’s relentless focus on appearance and fashion. Shorter-Gooden (co-author of “Shifting: The Double Lives of Black Women in America.”) said in the past, that Barbie has a bigger impact on black girls struggling with messages about skin color and hair. Barbie sales fell 14% in the most recently reported quarter. Worldwide sales have fallen every year since 2012. Trina Finton is a mom who was “thrilled” to hear about Barbie’s new looks, especially the curly hair. She said that in the past, she would avoid the Barbie aisle with her 3-year-old daughter because she didn't want her to feel bad that none of them looked like her. Kelly Brownell (Yale psychology professor in the 1990s) concluded that young girls notice the body shapes of icons such as Barbie and translate them into unhealthy images.Today,  Brownell said the new barbie “represents real progress, not only by having additional skin tones, but by beginning to correct the wildly unrealistic body shapes and sizes of earlier days”.

Presidential Elections

By Kylie O. (2/18/16)

The year of 2016 is going to have another presidential election. And this time Barack Obama can't be president due to term limits. This year there are going to be two Democratic candidates which are Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. And there are currently seven Republicans which are Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, Jim Gilmore, John Kosich, Marco Rubio, and Donald Trump. Currently, these are the candidates who are trying to get votes from citizens around the country.

Many people tried to run for president, but it didn’t work for them. As of right now, 14 people had dropped out and 14 others did not get enough votes. That is a lot and that brings it down to our final competitors.

On November 8, 2016, the 45th president will be chosen. And on January 20, 2017 the president will enter the White House.

There have been many rumors going around about all the competitors like how people are saying Bernie Sanders is hiding his tax plan which Hillary Clinton pointed out. But many opponents do that so they have a better chance of winning. So vote in November for who you think should become the next president.

Movie Review: Superman v. Batman

“I’m Batman”

By Colin K.  (4/29/16)

Clark Kent vs Bruce Wayne, one of the most well known comic book match-ups in the world of comics and outside of it. The fight has now been rekindled with the new movie by Warner Bros., who either did an amazing job, or miserably failed. The Warner Bros. did well making a good plot line, adding Lois Lane and Wonder Woman, until you notice that there were only Chryslers and Jeeps, minus the Aston Martin DB5. And what’s up with the suit that Batman got from Tony Stark? There are many flaws, but the movie totally summed things up. Now, there is the biggest question of them all: When is the Justice League Movie going to come out? We all know it is, from the Metahuman thesis that Bruce Wayne stole from LexCorp, to Bruce saying that they’ll gather the others. So who will they fight, how long will Superman stay gone, and where’s Robin?  And since when did Wonder Woman get involved? Why only halfway introduce her and three others? It doesn’t make any sense. Great thing they’re making another movie on this.

The movie ranged, out of 10, from a 5-9. Most of the people I asked said 8 or 7 or in between. I gave it an 8. It left me with too many questions. And since when did Wonder Woman get involved? Why only halfway introduce her and three others? It doesn’t make any sense.

Survey: Batman v. Superman

By Shabaan S. (3/20/16)

To begin, Batman vs Superman was a really hard choice for people to choose. It will be a movie that will come out on March 25,2016. In fact, I have surveyed fifty people to pick who will win this battle. However, out of fifty votes, Batman has gotten twenty-seven votes, and Superman has gotten twenty-three votes. To my knowledge, I think that twenty-seven of the fifty people I have surveyed knew that Batman gets the powerful and protected suit against Superman made of kryptonite. Also, this is why I am thinking that Batman would defeat Superman. Furthermore, Batman has other weapons in order to defeat Superman. Out of ten, I think that Batman would have a chance of eight of defeating Superman, which leaves it for two out of ten for Superman.

Video Game: Super Smash Brothers

By Iris H. (3/11/16)

Super Smash Bros. is a very famous game ever since 1999 and made by Japan. This game used to have a very small variety of 10 fighters. But now, you could choose between 56 fighters. Each of them has their own Final Smash once they get a celestial object called the Smash Ball. Super Smash Bros. is famous because you could actually fight each other with your favorite Nintendo characters to win with the most hits to knock out other fighters and in many stages like Battlefield and lots of other stages. All fictional worlds collide in Super Smash Bros. You could chose Mario, Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox, Pit, DK, Pikachu, Yoshi, your personal Mii fighters and so many more Nintendo favorites. You could have Smash Tours, Smash Runs, Games & more, play it online, make a special battle, and invite your friends or family to play in Smash battles and 8- Player Smash battles. If I rated it, it would be a complete 10. So, if you have Super Smash Bros., see how fun it is!

Survey: Current Movies

By Asa G. (3/7/16)

Movie Review: Inside Out

By Kylie O. (03/17/16)

Inside Out is a movie about a girl named Riley and and her five emotions that go on an adventure through the real (Riley) world and Riley’s imagination (the emotions). At the beginning, Riley moves to a new home and is just getting used to it. Then her five emotions come along. Her five emotions are Fear, Joy, Sadness, Anger and Disgust. They help her stay calm through the whole process. Sandness soon messes with the memory balls and everything falls apart. Riley’s imagination runs out and she wants to run away because she couldn't feel any emotions. Soon Sadness and Joy have to find all the memory balls before it is too late. I would rate this movie five stars out of five because throughout the story there is adventure and it is a great movie for kids; it lets them let their imagination run free. So I hope you watch this movie because I know you will love it!

By Colin K. (3/3/16)

Since 1991, Ernesto's Mexican Food has proudly served Midtown Sacramento as it's #1 choice for Best Mexican Food. By using only the freshest ingredients, their chefs work diligently to ensure the authentic Mexican flavors their customers desire while simultaneously keeping their well-being in mind. Ernesto's offers a range of award-winning dishes the whole family can enjoy.

They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but they are not a 24 hour restaurant.Their website boasts that they have “the best selection on draft”. The service is wonderful, with smiles all around, great waiters and waitresses, and delicious food.

It is a family friendly restaurant. It is a great idea to make reservations, but it isn’t required. This is, like the other restaurants I review, free of nuts.

Movie Review: Goosebumps

By Kylie O. (3/1/16)

Just recently a new Goosebumps movie was released on October 16, 2015. The director was Rob Letterman. This movie is about a boy named Zach Cooper who just moved to Madison with his mom. He meets a new girl whose dad does not want her seeing anyone and later Zach finds out that the girl’s dad was R. L. Stine. Every time one of his books open, a monster is released and they have to find a way to stop it. I would rate this book five stars out of five because it is a great movie with adventures and mysteries. So I hope you watch it soon because I know you're going to like it.

Movie Review: The Rise of Deadpool

By Shabaan S. (3/1/16)

Over the past month, Deadpool has been one of the most watched movies this year in theatres.  In fact, there has been a lot of Deadpool shows, movies, books, and comic strips. Although, Deadpool has been a favorite superhero because mostly his comic strips, in fact, Deadpool is one of the most favorite superhero's because he was played by Ryan Reynolds and Nolan North. Both men have made Deadpool  a sensational superhero to watch. Also, Deadpool hasn’t only been a favorite because of superhero clothes and his comic strips, but he has really phenomenal skills in combat fighting. Starring in the movie is Morena Baccanin as  Deadpool’s wife “Copycat” and his enemy Ajax really known as Ed Skrein. His allies in the adventurous movie include T.J. Miller, Karan Stoni, Stan Lee, and Brianna Hildebrand. Furthermore, in fictional universe of Marvel, Deadpool is in between a series of other Marvel movies such as 2016 Batman VS Superman and Civil War. Finally, Deadpool’s funny comedic moments may earn Ryan Reynolds an Oscar. I would recommend this movie for others to watch.

Restaurant Review: Ju Hachi

"Japan on S Street"

By Colin K. (2/10/16)

Ju Hachi is an authentic Japanese restaurant in a quaint Victorian house on 1730 S St, Sacramento, CA. Taka Watanabe is the founder. Taka Watanabe has been making sushi for over 20 years. He arrived in the U.S. in 1986 from his native country Brazil, where he was raised by Japanese parents but educated in Portuguese. His parents instilled in him a love of good food and cooking. He remembers fondly watching his mother make sushi for the family on special occasions. As soon as he arrived in the Bay Area, he immediately found work in a Japanese restaurant, where he quickly learned to make sushi. In 1989, he met and married his wife, Susan, and shortly thereafter, relocated to Sacramento.

In Sacramento, he apprenticed under the watchful eye of Shige Tokita of Shige Sushi for six years. Shige, a classically-trained chef from Japan, was all business, and quite a stickler for detail. Taka re-learned to make sushi "the proper way." It was tough in the early years, but Taka credits Shige with "everything [he] now know[s] about making sushi." In 1998, Taka opened his first sushi bar in Midtown Sacramento with a former partner. In 2001, he opened Taka's Sushi in Fair Oaks with his current partner, Peter Kwong. In 2003, Taka sold his shares of his Midtown restaurant to his former partner, and focused entirely on the Fair Oaks location. Finally, Taka and Peter had the opportunity to re-lease the site of Taka's first restaurant in Midtown. After an extensive remodel, Ju Hachi was born. Taka now divides his time between Taka's Sushi and Ju Hachi. In his very limited "downtime," he enjoys spending time with his family which includes his wife, daughter, two sons, two Standard Poodles and a menagerie of chickens.

The service is magnificent. They immediately serve you sesame cucumber to snack on, so there is no complaining there. The waitress that served me was kind and sweet. Now the food is incredible. The gyoza comes with dipping sauce. And the California Roll is tasty, coming with wasabi on the side and caviar on top. I would give it a 5 out of 5 stars.

Movie Review: Full Metal Jacket

By Lucho M. (2/22/16)

The Oscar nominated movie, Full Metal Jacket was produced on June 17, 1987. The movie was a mix of drama and action combined. You could even say it is comical in some points when in one scene of the movie, R. Lee Ermey, who is casted as Sargent Hartman, finds a jelly donut in Vincent D'Onofrio who plays Private Pyle’s military container. It got a very good rating of  8.7 out of 10 in IMDb and 95% Rotten Tomato rating. Full Metal Jacket is my personal recommendation for a anyone interested in a war movie. It consists of a good and well plotted story with the journal of one soldier named Private Joker experiencing the action and drama of the Vietnam War. It is a rated R movie because of it’s violence and language. But it gives an interesting interpretation of the Vietnam War. You can find Full Metal Jacket on Netflix, Redbox or any industrial store to get the full HD 1080p experience.

Book Review: The Waterfire Saga

By Cynthia H. (2/10/16)

If you love adventure, thrill, drama, trust, and leadership then there is a perfect series of books for you. It is called The Waterfire Saga written by Jennifer Donnelly. In The Waterfire Saga (saga meaning series), there are so many extraordinary characters. The main characters are Serafina, Neela, Ling, Ava, Becca, and Astrid. All of these six mermaids are trustful, brave, strong, smart, and determined. The whole series is about these six mermaids that have to save all the waters of the world from the monster called the Abbadon. This book is perfect for students who have a 1000 lexile or higher. And if you get stuck on some of the words there is a dictionary in the back of the book. This series is also prefered for 5th grade and higher. So, if you want to learn how this epic adventure, journey, and friendship began, read the books because it will blow your mind.

Book Review: Series of Unfortunate Events

By Kylie O. (2/10/16)

The Series of Unfortunate Events is a thrilling book by Lemony Snicket. It is about three children who lose their parents in a fire and go to live with a nasty man named Count Olaf. And throughout the series, he hunts them down. I would give this book a rate of five stars out of five because it shows the adventures and mysteries between the children. Violet is a 14 year old girl [the oldest] who loves to invent. Klaus is a 12 year old [the middle child] and he loves to read. And last there is Sunny, she is the youngest who loves to bite. So if I was you, I would read this book and let your imagination run free.
